BSSA trains suppliers to Petra Diamonds

BSSA has provided business skills training to more than 130 potential suppliers of goods and services to Petra Diamonds at the company’s mines in Cullinan, Kimberley, Finsch (Kuruman) and Koffiefontein.

The Foundation was contracted by Motswiri Consultants to provide the training, and mentoring and assistance in forming joint ventures, to SMMEs in the communities surrounding the mines.

This followed after BSSA had been involved in a similar programme at the Lonmin mine at Mooinooi in the North West during 2008 and 2009.

The potential suppliers to Petra Diamonds completed a course on three levels, which included all aspects of business management. Special attention was given to pricing and costing, and tendering.

The training took place at all four mines weekly over a period of eight months. Although numbers varied over time, two groups were trained at each mine, except at Kimberley, where the groups were combined into one. When the training component of the programme was completed on 16 April 2014, a total of 113 training interventions had been completed.

To offer the training in this project, BSSA also utilised the services of some of its accredited, independent trainers from the Free State and Northern Cape.
