BSSA training 'invaluable on so many levels'

William Mashishi"I love what I do, I do what I love. I am blessed." These are the words of William Mashishi (59) of Ekangala near Bronkhorstspruit, whose pest control and deep cleaning business has reached new heights since completing an eight-month BSSA training course in basic business skills.

William's enterprise, Mabee's Business Solutions, was recently awarded an office cleaning contract by Petra Diamonds at the company's Cullinan mine, pipping three other companies to the post.

"I was initially sceptical about the training, but now realise I really didn't know very much about business at all. The training BSSA provided was invaluable on so many levels, and my attitude towards my business has changed completely," William says.

BSSA was contracted by Motswiri Consultants to offer the training to potential suppliers to the mines of Petra Diamonds in Cullinan, Kimberley, Finsch (Kuruman) and Koffiefontein. It included all aspects of business management, and special attention was given to pricing and costing, and tendering.

"For me, the most useful aspects of the course were how to write a business plan, and how to manage my finances effectively. I also learnt invaluable leadership skills - I now communicate with my employees and my clients in a much more effective way. I now know how to motivate my employees and am much more open in my approach," he says.

William started Mabee's Business Solutions in 2001, doing once-off work for a large corporate in Bronkhorstspruit. At the time he had only one employee. Since being awarded the Petra Diamonds contract, he has had to employ a further 15 people. "We have an option to renew the contract after a year, and our work may also be extended to include pest control."

He advises all SMMEs to undergo training such as that offered by BSSA. "As a business owner, I have grown in a way I would never have thought possible, and my enterprise has moved to a completely different level. It is exciting to watch my business grow, and I use what I have learnt on the BSSA course every day," he says.
