Humana Youth in Action
BSSA recently trained 120 youth club leaders and 125 club members forming part of the Youth in Action programme of Humana People to People in South Africa.
Humana People to People is an international network of 32 organisations engaged in development work. In South Africa, the Youth in Action programme focuses on engaging unemployed young people in community development projects through clubs. A total of 120 youth clubs have been formed, which now have around 1 679 members.
The core activities of the clubs have largely been around sports, or arts and culture, but Humana has been encouraging club members to embark on income-generating activities and small businesses. All clubs are headed by a club leader, and BSSA was contracted to train these leaders in basic business skills to ensure they could advise club members on the basic elements of running a business.
A second round of funding from Humana resulted in BSSA also training the club members in basic business skills.
Both training programmes were implemented in villages in Mpumalanga (Bushbuckridge area), Limpopo (Tubatse), the Eastern Cape (Mbashe) and Gauteng (Kagiso).
